OSCAR-WINNING actress Renee Zellweger has been back to school in Keswick this
week.
Keswick School’s gymnasium was transformed into a railway carriage to film
scenes from her new movie Miss Potter, about the life of famous Lakeland
children’s author Beatrix Potter.
The film crew took over the school gym and built the set last week, ready for
filming which took place on Bank Holiday Monday.
School head Mike Chapman said: “It was very interesting having the film crew
around. Renee was here, although the day she came the children were off school
so they didn’t get to see her.”
However, Mr Chapman said one member of staff had met the American actress,
famous for her roles in the Bridget Jones films.
He said: “They were amazingly efficient.
“They brought their own burger van and make-up van and everything was handled
very smoothly.”
Mr. Chapman said: “They asked for permission to use the school last Tuesday and
were building the set on Wednesday and Thursday. The film people made a sizeable
donation to the school funds.”
The idea of using Keswick School as a closed set came from a former pupil who
now works in the film business.
Mr. Chapman said: “Susan, whose father Martin Bellarby taught at Keswick School,
was with the location squad and knew that Keswick School was likely to be able
to help.”
The scene filmed at Keswick School involves a conversation between Beatrix
Potter and a chaperone which takes place in a railway carriage.
A spokesman for Renee Zellweger said it was “a fairly crucial scene” featuring
Beatrix returning from a visit to her publisher.
Filming along the western shores of Derwentwater has continued this week.
The good weather has provided ample opportunities for the film-makers to set
some superb scenic shots of the lake and surrounding fells.

TOURISTS from around
the world look set to descend on to the Lake District following the Beatrix
Potter film.
That’s according to Miss Potter producer David Kirschner, which stars Renee
Zellweger.
He believes the Lakes could see a tourism boom similar to that experienced by
New Zealand following the box office smash Lord of the Rings.
Filming in the Lakes for Miss Potter has just been completed.
Many of the stars stayed in local hotels and it was even claimed the Bridget
Jones star shopped in Ulverston during a break in filming.
Mr Kirschner said: “I am so excited Miss Potter has been made here.
“With Lord of the Rings, so many people went to New Zealand to see what had been
done there and I think when people see this film, they will come here.
“I have never been anywhere as beautiful as this and Renee Zellweger told me she
thought it was “the most beautiful place on earth.”
