The Revlon/UCLA Breast Center, established at UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center, offers in one setting a multidisciplinary approach for women with all forms of breast problems. The Center’s approach combines the latest in diagnostic, treatment and monitoring programs with consideration for each patient’s unique needs. Our highly trained staff strongly believes that women should not only be well cared for but also feel well cared for.
The team at the Breast Center includes radiologists, medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, a nurse practitioner, a physical therapist, a dietitian, a geneticist, social workers and a psychologist. Together, they provide patients with the most up-to-date care available.
Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Program
For women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, this program provides
a comprehensive evaluation and recommendations for treatment by a team of
specialists, all within the course of one afternoon.
The specialists, who may include a surgeon, a radiation oncologist, a medical oncologist, a plastic surgeon and a psychologist, will evaluate each woman’s case. Pathology slides and mammograms will be reviewed by the appropriate specialists, and the case will be fully discussed in a conference by the whole team. A recommendation from the team will be presented to the patient at the end of the visit. A tape recorder is provided to enable the patient to record the specialists’ recommendations and a written summary will be supplied within five working days.
Any woman with breast cancer who elects to be treated at UCLA will be assigned a staff member who will be her advocate throughout the course of her care.
Diagnostic Program
For women who have an abnormal mammogram, a palpable lump in the breast or
any other breast problem, a diagnostic program specialist will provide further
evaluation. If necessary diagnostic tests such as fine needle aspiration,
ductography and stereotactically guided core biopsy are available, as well as
research programs using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission
tomography (PET).
High Risk Program
For women with a family history or other risk factors for breast cancer,
this program includes careful monitoring to detect abnormalities as early as
possible. In addition, women receive education about genetics, nutrition,
exercise, early detection and psychosocial issues related to breast cancer.
Follow-up Program
For women who are undergoing or who have completed treatment for breast
cancer, this program provides a multidisciplinary approach to cancer
rehabilitation. Nutrition, management of post-menopausal symptoms, prevention of
lymphedema, and other issues related to the quality of life are emphasized.
Clinical Trials
New drugs or treatments are tested in clinical trials before they become
widely available. The Revlon/UCLA Breast Center is part of the Jonsson Cancer
Center at UCLA and is affiliated with the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast
Project and the South Western Oncology Group, which allows access to all
cooperative group clinical trials. In addition, original research programs at
UCLA welcome qualified participants.
